It is not uncommon for forced-air systems in properties to go out of balance every now and then. This means that different amounts of air are distributed throughout the building, leaving some rooms with too much hot or cold air and others with not enough. Contrary to what most people believe though, the furnace is not to blame for an unbalanced system. This problem is associated with the inadequate distribution of air through the ducts to various rooms in the building.
Air balancing is a simple process. In order to perform an accurate balancing, all ducts (where air is distributed) and registers (where intake occurs) must be open. Since dampers may be placed at various points in the ducts, they must also be turned so that the airflow is unrestricted. Thermometers are ten placed in each room to determine which rooms are out of balance.
