Indirect waste pipe are drain pipes that extend from the
sink but do no connect directly to the rest of the drainage system. Instead,
there is a gap between the two and the wastewater from the pipe drains into a
floor drain. The floor drain collects any material that would not be suitable
for the pipes.
The point of having an indirect waste pipe is to provide the
pipe with protection from backflow and stoppages. Due to the nature of sinks
and other drainage areas in places such as hospitals and restaurants, these
places are required to have indirect waste pipes connected to the sink drain.
