What is a sewer line?
A sewer line (sometimes called a drain
line or sewer pipe) is the main pipe that connects from the home to the sewer main underneath the street and is wastewater’s first step on its journey through the sewer system. This pipe is usually angled downward so that the pull of gravity can direct the wastewater into the sewer main with ease.
The sewer line is only a few inches in diameter and depending on the location, can be buried several feet below the ground, usually running directly below the front yard. These are also typically plastic pipes that can be interrupted by tree roots
and other debris.
How do I know if my home’s sewer line has a problem?
A good sign of an issue with your home’s sewer line is a slow drain or a toilet
that flushes slowly. The toilet shows the most dramatic instances of blockage because it sends sudden large discharges of water and waste into the sewer line. If plunging your toilet properly doesn’t solve the problem, it may indicate of a sewer line problem.
