Working with water pipe might seem overwhelming at first, but knowing the basics will help you analyze and evaluate your situation.  In Arizona, your plumbing water pipes are typically made of copper, steel, or a plastic like PVC.

How do I fix or repair water pipe in AZ? The method for repairing broken water pipe varies depending on the type of pipe. Small pipe leaks are normally fixable using a sealant or special pipe patching compound and material.

• Copper pipe uses a process called soldering to repair and fit pieces together.  This involves heating the fittings and flux to just the right temperature, then combining the two for a permanent fix. Soldering or "sweating" copper pipes or plumbing together is similar to welding... but uses heat from a torch vs. an electrical arc. Most Arizona homes built since 1975 have copper plumbing.
  

• Steel pipe is typically repaired using a bench vise, cutters, and threading tools to fix the threaded fittings on both ends.  Although it is typically heavy work, steel pipe will provide a strong, reliable path for water and gas.

• Plastic water piping, most commonly referred to as CPVC, is durable and commonly used.   The benefits are many, such as cost and ease-of-use. With regards to repairs, CPVC is not repairable.  When damaged, a new piece must be purchased and the damaged section of pipe replaced.
